Talks & Meditations with Luang Por Viradhammo or Ayya Medhanandi

Two Friday evenings per month, members and friends of the Ottawa Buddhist Society have the opportunity to share in the teachings of the Buddha, often with Ayya Medhanandi or LP Viradhammo. The location is 91A Fourth Avenue in the Glebe, just east of Bank Street.

From January to March 2018 when the monks and nuns near Perth are in silent winter retreat, the OBS invites other dedicated and skilled lay teachers and monks living in the city to share their perspectives on the Buddha dhamma.

The sessions usually begin with a period of guided meditation, followed by a Dhamma talk and period of questions and answers led by the evening’s teacher. There is no requirement to be a Buddhist or a member of the Ottawa Buddhist Society to attend these sessions.

As there are no cushions or mats in the meditation hall, we ask that you bring these items with you. Chairs are provided for those who wish to use them.

There is no fixed charge for attending a Friday Evening Meeting.  Charitable donations are gratefully accepted and go to support the teacher and to support this and similar OBS events.

Please note that the capacity of the Meeting room is 80 persons due to fire restriction. We will not be able to admit extra people once the 80 person capacity is reached. Attendance is on a first come first serve basis and please kindly do not make reservation of seats for others who might come later. The Meeting Room will open at 7:00 pm.

CANCELLED Friday Evening Meeting with Jim Bedard and Randy Baker – March 27, 2020 @ Quaker House
Mar 27 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

The Ottawa Buddhist Society has decided to cancel this meditation event with Jim Bedard and Randy Baker to help in the goal of preventing the spread of COVID-19 and to support the initiatives of Ottawa Public Health and Public Health Ontario.

Jim Bedard

In his early twenties, Jim’s spiritual angst led him to the experiential practice of meditation: Christian meditation, Transcendental Meditation (TM), and then Zen Buddhist meditation.

In 1980 Jim began practicing Zen meditation and soon after became a student of Roshi Philip Kapleau of the Rochester Zen Center. After completing his formal training in Zen, Jim began practicing with senior Vipassana teachers in the Theravada Buddhist tradition.

Today, Jim offers a balanced, direct approach to practices that point directly to the heart of the teachings. He teaches Insight Meditation at Satipañña Insight Meditation Toronto.

Jim has written two books: Lotus in the Fire and Old Pond: The Teachings of the Elders.

Randy Baker ~ Satipanna Toronto

Randy Baker began practicing Zen meditation in 1977 as a student of Roshi Philip Kapleau. His Zen training included 10 years on staff at the Rochester Zen Center. After practicing Zen for 20 years, Randy took up the practice of Vipassana. He has since worked with a number of well known Western Vipassana teachers.
